Intercollegiate Committee
The apex collaborative body uniting 48 professional medical colleges to provide national-level consensus and advocate for health excellence in Sri Lanka.
Affiliate Colleges & Associations01 Establishment (April 2020)
Taking into consideration the lack of visibility and dilution of efforts by individual medical professional bodies during the COVID-19 crisis, the SLMA took the initiative to establish a dedicated forum: the SLMA Inter-Collegiate Committee.
Key Objectives:
- To provide a common platform for all professional bodies to communicate, allowing a candid and transparent dialogue.
- To establish national level consensus among all medical professional bodies with regards to national level guidance and recommendations.
- To allow content experts to contribute to national level guidance and recommendations.
- To prevent duplication of already established guidelines and consensus.
- To add value, validity and weight to the work done by the individual colleges and associations.
- To advocate evidence-based best practices among the medical community.
02 Strategic COVID-19 Response
Urgent Presidential Meeting (May 2021)
On May 10, 2021, a team of six specialists from the SLMA and ICC met with the President, warning that the exponential rise in COVID-19 cases was rapidly overwhelming healthcare resources. The experts emphasized that failure to implement a rapid action plan would lead to a surge in avoidable deaths.
Mobility & Lockdown
Requested stringent implementation of restrictions based on caseload density and restriction of inter-district movement.
Home Isolation
Proposed authorized home management for asymptomatic cases, monitored by health professionals, to relieve pressure on hospitals.
The Formal Appeal (August 2021)
Re-warned of an imminent breakdown of the entire healthcare system due to exhausted capacity. Demanded a “very severe mobility restriction” for two weeks and prioritized single-dose-effective vaccines (Pfizer/AstraZeneca) for high-risk groups over 60.
03 Impact & Current Resilience
Since 2020, the ICC has transitioned into a permanent pillar of national health advocacy, addressing drug procurement, healthcare worker safety, and public health policy.
Disaster Response: Cyclone Ditwah
The ICC mobilized collective strength to support affected communities, coordinating emergency medical guidance via a national helpline and supporting the restoration of health services.
Current infrastructure projects include the rebuilding of DGH Chilaw, BH Mahiyanganaya, and several primary healthcare centers. The Committee is committed to advancing a climate-resilient health system for the future of Sri Lanka.
